ŽOK UB claim historic Serbian national league title

Ub, Serbia, April 15, 2021. ŽOK UB made history earlier this week as they emerged as the winners of the Banka Poštanska Štedionica Superleague 2020/2021 – thus becoming the women’s national champions of Serbia for the very first time. Playing on home soil in the fifth and last match of the championship series, they defeated Tent OBRENOVAC 3-2 (25-15, 25-21, 19-25, 18-25, 15-11), after 116 minutes of play.

Zoran Gajić, President of the Volleyball Federation of Serbia, presented Ana Marija Mitrović, team captain of ŽOK UB, with the trophy for the winners of the national league. Darko Glišić, Lord Mayor of the municipality of Ub, and Ivan Knežević, Secretary General of the Volleyball Federation of Serbia, were in charge of presenting the gold medals.

Earlier this season, ŽOK UB had represented Serbia in the CEV Volleyball Cup, losing in the quarterfinals to eventual gold medal winners Saugella MONZA of Italy. In fact, ŽOK UB were the only team to take one set from the Italians throughout the whole competition.

Gyula Mester, First Vice-President of the Volleyball Federation of Serbia, handed over the consolation trophy for the playoff finalists to Jelena Lazić, the captain of Tent. Jelena Nikolić, Vice-President of the Volleyball Federation of Serbia, and Petar Bogunović, Vice-President of the Volleyball Federation of Serbia and President of the Volleyball Association of Vojvodina, handed over the silver medals to the players of Tent. The team from Obrenovac had reached the semis of the CEV Cup earlier this season, losing there to Saugella MONZA as well.
