Tirana, Albania, March 15, 2017. This year’s Albanian national league is turning into a close and exciting race – and this applies as much to the men’s as well as to the women’s competition. The regular season is slowly but surely coming to an end, but the race for a spot in the Playoffs is still open. This makes sure that all teams are fighting for every point in order to move on to the semis and final stages of the competition.
National cup winners Partizani lead the way in the men’s national league, as they have not suffered any loss so far – with Farka Volley following in second place. Both Partizani and Farka Volley have already booked their spot in the Playoffs. Four teams are in contention for the two remaining places – with three weeks still to go before the end of the regular season. These are reigning national champions Studenti, as well as the teams of Tirana, Vllaznia and Erzeni. As for Teuta, Skenderbeu and Elbasani, they are at the bottom of the charts and out of contention for a spot in the next round.
Barleti Volley top the pile in the women’s national league with an immaculate record as well, with Teuta and Partizani following in second and third place, respectively. Teuta and Partizani are motivated to put up a fight for the title as much as they did in the national cup – eventually won by Barleti Volley. Tirana are the favourites to finish in fourth place, but with three more rounds remaining, anything can happen – with Vllaznia still in the race for the Playoffs. Skenderbeu and Lushnja are in sixth and seventh place, respectively whereas bottom-ranked Elbasani are most likely to be relegated to the second division of the national league at the end of the current season.
